Homemade power meter

There are power meters, and then there are power meters. The ones you get at local stores are for low frequency. You’d be lucky to get 1KHz BW out of them. There are analog multipliers that are designed to multiply two voltages and output the resulting voltage. One input would be connected to the voltage while the other input would be connected to the current. The voltage would be across the load, and it could be a dynamic load such as a diode or whatever. The multiplier would know the current from the voltage across a fixed resistor. And voilà, a high bandwidth power meter.

One analog multiplier chip is the AD633, which costs about $8 and will get you about 1 MHz BW.  A faster analog multiplier is the AD835, which will get you about 250 MHz BW!!  The AD835 cost about $16.

I would need thee AD835 chips to test my Hue device to get live power readings, for a total of $55, includes S&H.  That’s too costly right now. If anyone has a cheaper option, please let me know.  There are numerous inexpensive multiplier circuits out there using FET’s for example, but all of the circuit I’ve seen are not very linear.  … Oh well, back to the drawing board.

Multiple oscilloscopes

The Hantek PC USB oscilloscope software allows you to connect multiple Hantek units. For example two Hantek units gives you 4 channels. There could be a major issue in that the Hantek units will most likely not be in sync with each other. In order to be in sync both units need to be in communication with each other so they trigger at the same time. For example a pulse signal might repeat at tens of thousands of times per second, but if both Hantek units don’t trigger one the exact same pulse, then it’s not a true 4 channel oscilloscope.

You have to remember that oscilloscopes do not show everything. They don’t show every pulse. There could be 10 thousand pulse trains per second, but your oscilloscope trace might only update say 50 times per second.

Over the months I’ve been itching to build my own PC USB oscilloscope that has at least 6 channels. Yes, that would cost a fortune to buy such a scope. Also, each channel must be a differential input, other wise I’d need 11 normal channels. And hopefully it will have at least 5 MHz BW. Wow, I seriously doubt there’s such a 6 *differential input* channel 5+ MHz BW oscilloscope for sale. Maybe one would have to sell their house to buy it. That’s how many channels I need to quick get live efficiency results for my Hue device. Oh, and the scope needs to have powerful math. Most scopes only allow you to multiply channel one with channel two.  Well, that’s far from going getting you efficiency.

Anyhow, a lot of my time over that past several days has been toward designing such an unheard of oscilloscope. What a nightmare it is to design. If it’s successful, then hopefully I can market and sell it. It’s not to be confused with my excess energy research. It’s only a way to make some money to live. :-D

The goal of my oscilloscope is –>

  • At least 6 channels, hopefully 8.
  • All channels should be differential inputs. That is, none of the probe inputs have to be connected to ground.
  • At least 40 MHz BW.
  • Allow for custom complex math between all of the channels, including integral math.
  • Be a USB PC oscilloscope.
  • A signal generator. Indeed, an oscilloscope and signal generator all at once.
  • An LCR meter.
  • A DMM.
  • A dual temperature probe.
  • RPM and frequency meter.

And it would be nice to also have a color LCD along with batteries so it could be a mobile oscilloscope as well. … Did I miss anything???  :-D :-D :-D

RMS

It appears a lot of people in the “free energy” community still don’t get what rms is.  Most know that it stands for root mean square, but they confuse it with a sine wave.  RMS has nothing to do with the sine wave. Rather, in electrical engineering rms is a mathematical equation to calculate the root mean square of *any* signal. The equation is –>

  x_{\mathrm{rms}} =  \sqrt {{{x_1}^2 + {x_2}^2 + \cdots + {x_n}^2} \over n}

Where Xrms is the rms result, X1, X2, … Xn would be points on the signal, and n is the number of points.  For example, a sine wave –>

8 point sine wave: 0.00, 0.707, 1.00, 0.707, 0.00, -0.707, -1.00, -0.707

The rms is –>

  x_{\mathrm{rms}} =   \sqrt {{{0.00}^2 + {0.707}^2 +  {1.00}^2 + {0.707}^2 + {0.00}^2 + {-0.707}^2 + {-1.00}^2 + {-0.707}^2} \over 8}

And thus is 0.707, which is in agreement with the known rms value of a sine wave. If you need more significant figures, then it’s a / sqrt(2), where a is the sine wave peak. In this case the peak was 1.00, so the rms is 1.00 / sqrt(2).

Another example. The following is the rms of a 5 volt DC signal. Take a wild guess what it’s rms is –>

5 volt DC signal:  5, 5, 5 …

The rms is –>

  x_{\mathrm{rms}} =   \sqrt {{{5.0}^2 + {5.0}^2 + {5.0}^2} \over 3}

And thus is 5 volts rms.  Surprise!  :-D

Also, rms is not to be confused with average. The average for a sine wave doe not equal the rms of a sine wave.

What makes rms very useful in electrical engineering is that the rms value can be used for example to directly calculate power. For example, the power (V * I) for a sine wave voltage peak * current peak is incorrect, but the sine wave voltage rms * current rms is correct.

A final and *VERY* important note here is that most low end voltage meters show the AC rms *assuming* your signal is a sine wave.  So if you feed a DMM in AC voltage mode a sawtooth wave, or a square wave, or anything other than a sine wave, then it’s giving you the incorrect rms voltage. You need a meter that gives *true rms*. Also, make sure your signal does not have frequency components that go beyond your meters range.

2 days until Earth day!

Depending on your time zone, Earth day is 1 to 2 days away! Are you ready for the parties?  In Los Angeles there are planned parties everywhere. Another option, that is becoming popular, are virtual parties.  The star of the first Bachelorette, Trista Sutter, and her husband Ryan will be hosting a daylong Earth Day Party on ParentsConnect.com. There 10 hour long virtual party, starting at April 22, 10 am – 8pm EST, will be one filled with games, prizes, and fun. For details go to http://www.parentsconnect.com/connect/boards/hot_topics/earth_day/chat_it_up.jhtml

If you’re not into the famous Bachelorette reality TV show, then consider starting your own virtual party. Invite your “free energy” friends, or family.

Also you might be interested in hosting a real Earth Day party. A few common tips include:

  • Use Eco-invites, instead of paper.
  • Arrange for Green transportation. Encourage your friends to bike, walk, and carpool, or take public transportation to your party. Include information on bus schedules in your invitations.
  • Eating green. This has less of an impact on our beautiful environment. Remember Earth Day is the day to experiment with foods that you would normally not eat. Most people don’t like tofu dishes, but I tell you that there are tofu dishes, and then there are tofu dishes. I have no idea why, but most tofu foods created by companies are terrible. Yet, there are some that taste better than most dishes I’ve had. So don’t give up on tofu. Also there’s numerous other options such as tempeh? Or how about the famous Greek food, Hummus. That stuff is great, especially hot & spice  Hummus. There are endless popular vegetarian dishes, some as simple as baked beans. Go for the organic dishes on Earth day, such as potato chips. I wonder if Sun Chips are organic. Well, they’re the best anyway. Try variates of soy cheese. Again, test beforehand to find the good brands.
  • Use green colors in your party decorations.

Enjoy your day on Earth, Earth day! It’s one of the biggest events globally.  Most importantly, don’t forget what this day represents. Lets help heal the ecosystem or give to non-profit organizations that are trying their best to help. Enjoy! :-D

Real science

Lets hope the free energy movement will begin to learn real science. Lets please end the guessing games, and blindly replicating. You probably won’t learn enough in say 1/2 year to become a paid physicists, but you could easily learn enough to conduct free energy research in a specific field such as Cold Fusion or Diode research.

Real scientists

Everyone needs to stop the drunk wobbly guessing scientific methodology. What we have is by no means a free energy movement.

On 2009, May 03 I divorced myself from what might be referred to as the free energy community, and I hope all legit researchers do the same! Please consider. Educate yourself– see my recent blog on self-education. You don’t need to spend half of your time on the forums chit chatting. Nobody needs to know what you’re doing until you succeed! That is how we are going succeed in achieving global free energy. Not by guessing at “Oh, what will happen if I place a magnet here, or there because my Intuition says so.”

Take a look at all the work done in the free energy movement. All of it’s a bunch of people replicating claims. So we have the fakers creating junk, and the kids replicating them. That’s *no* free energy movement! That’s a bunch of junk that’s a guaranteed recipe to failure. It’s not science.

The Scientific method is about trying to understand and discover something by means of a scientific logical method. For example, if someone thought of an integer betwen 0 and 10000, and asked you to guess, which method would you prefer –>

Method #1 – the guesser:
“Oh, its 9834? No! Is it 3231? No! Is it 7542? No!“  Etc., etc.

Method #2 – process of elimination:
Is it less than 5000? Yes! Is it less than 2000? Yes! Is it less than 1000? Yes! Is it less than 500? No! Is it greater than 750? No! Is it greater than 625? Yes! Is it greater than 688? No! Is it greater than 657? No! Is it greater than 641? Yes! Is it greater than 649? Yes! Is it greater than 653? No! Is it greater than 651? Yes! Then it *MUST* be 652! That is correct!!

If you think there’s an unknown magnetic anomaly, then by all means test it, but for heaven sake don’t wobble around placing random parts here and there hoping to discover the holly grail. If for instance you think two magnets moving perpendicular to each other will produce an unknown effect, then test it in a scientific manner. You don’t need a degree from a University! Design a setup, map out the forces, and stop the wobbly guessing games. If you stumble upon a problem on how to achieve or calculate something, then just post your question in one of the countless science forums. That’s how you’ll learn. You’ll also learn by reading science textbooks. Spend at least 30 minutes per day reading them. See one of my recent blog posts on self-education. There you will learn where to buy University textbooks from a few dollars or less each.

  1. Divorce yourself from the free energy community.
  2. Work alone.
  3. Stop spending your time in forums chit chatting about dreams and guessing games.
  4. Educate yourself. There are countless University textbooks on half.ebay.com that sell for practically nothing.
  5. Use scientific methods to search for anomalies.
  6. Test your theories by building a device or a simulation. Whatever works best for you.

If you keep that up for a few years, you could qualify as an Honorary scientist. If you so desire, it could be your new career to bring home the bacon, a career you’ll probably love. There are countless companies that do not require a college degree. And who knows, may you’ll be the one to discover the holly grail, or at least make some major breakthroughs.

We need your help. We don’t need the wobbly drunken scientists!

Self-education

To the right of my blog site you will find links for self-education. I would encourage all legit researchers in the free energy movement to spend at least 30 to 60 minutes reading books and web pages on physics and engineering –>

en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Category:Physics
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Physics

And the electrical engineering pages –>
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Electrical_engineering

And science books, including University textbooks, where a good percentage are a few bucks –>
books.half.ebay.com

I’ve purchased a lot of science books at half.ebay.com that were ~ 50 cents ($0.50), some of which are over 1000 pages!  It appears most or at least a lot of University professors continually update their expensive books (e.g., $150), and the so-called outdated books (great condition) are often almost free at half.ebay.com.

There is *nothing* like a book! The odds are almost zero that you’ll find the full details on a subject online like you will in a book.

Don’t give up on free energy research! Academic science is the way to go. Yes, there are a lot of contradictions in academic science. Of course, otherwise they would have the perfect ultimate grand theory. IMO that’s an impossible task. Reality is infinite. There will always be something to learn. Conventional physics will always have flaws, but it’s by far the best place to start. Ambient thermal energy that always exists in all matter is accepted by conventional physics. Conventional physics has proven long ago that all solids on earth’s surface have ~ 1 billion joules of energy per cubic meter (1 meter = 3.28 feet). Such energy in matter is continually sustained by the Sun.

Ambient thermal energy is by far the best place to start free energy research. You can try to capture such energy contained in gases (vibrating atoms), or in liquids, or solids. I am just one person in this field, and in a matter of a few years have single handily already made major breakthroughs. If you’re interested, then I have to say what I would want you to tell me –> If you know what’s best for you and everyone, ***PLEASE*** conduct such research in hiding!!!!!!! Do NOT tell anyone until you have something major that will shake the entire academic science community! If you need to ask questions, then go to various science forums and ask anonymously, or send an email to a science professor, etc.
